Choosing The Right Golf Ball

Today's market is filled with an almost infinite range of golf balls and so choosing the right golf ball can be difficult.  There are single-layer, double-layer and multi-layered golf balls, composite balls, exploding balls, trick balls, golf balls with dimples, golf balls without dimples, balls with an odd number of dimples, balls with an even number of dimples, balls with circular dimples and balls with hexagonal dimples.  There is a golf ball in there for everyone!

What golf ball should I use and does it make a difference to my game?

Of course it does.  Different golf balls react in different ways.  If you want to get the best out of your game, you need to look at the options available.

First, consider your own ability.  Performance golf balls, or new golf balls would probably be wasted on the beginner.  Obviously they perform better, but cost more.  For the amateur, discount golf balls, value or used golf balls will do the job and are cheaper to replace when you lose them.

So, how do dimples on a golf ball affect its flight?

Dimples influence the aerodynamics by reducing Pressing Drag, which is the separation of airflow behind the golf ball.  As the ball - or anything - flies through the air, a cushion of air builds up at the front.  Dimples help this air to maintain its hold on the ball's surface up to the point when it reaches the back of the ball and breaks away.  Turbulence is created which, coupled with the ever-present backspin, enables the air passing over the ball to flow more quickly than the air going under it.  Just like an aeroplane's wing, this causes lift.

Manufacturers have experimented with different shaped dimples on a golf ball; rectangles, hexagons and squares have all been tried.  Hexagons were found to reduce drag the most, so if you want to increase your distance, choose golf balls with hexagonal dimples.

Height can be increased by giving the golf ball more backspin. The greater the number of dimples, the greater the height achieved.  Inversely, if you have a tendency to slice or hook your shot, having a golf ball with a lower dimple count will help to cancel the effect.

What are the advantages of a soft golf ball?

A soft ball will make it easier to apply driver backspin without losing short iron backspin.  When pitching, a softer golf ball facilitates backspin for greater control.

Distance golf balls are made to go further and be more accurate but may be more difficult to stop when you're on the green.  A distance golf ball would be good for those of you who have a handicap in the middle to high range.

Spin golf balls, as their name implies, are designed to accentuate the spin put on the ball.  For example, if you needed to bend your shot to avoid an obstacle, such a ball would make it easier.  They are also easier to apply backspin to, so they will stop more readily.  Spin golf balls are of a solid, multilayered construction and are therefore very durable.

Ladies golf balls are designed for players with a less powerful swing.  They offer an increased driving distance.

The construction of a golf ball will affect how it rolls on the green.  A hard golf ball will generally roll further than a soft golf ball.  Of course, all balls are not perfectly true and will not roll in a straight line. The better and more expensive the golf ball, the greater the chance that it will be true.

What golf ball should I use?

To enable you to answer this question effectively, you will need to experiment with several golf balls.  Choose a golf ball and stick with it long enough to see how it behaves in different situations.  It may feel good to drive, but difficult to putt.  It may be easy on the backspin, but wooden on the green.  It's all about compromise.  Try an assortment of golf balls and consider each ball's good and bad points in relation to your own particular abilities.  Very soon, choosing the right golf ball will be easy and, as a result, you will see an improvement in your golf game.
