The golf tour bag is the style most commonly used by professional golfers.  These are large golf bags with enough room for 14 clubs together with pockets and pouches for many other items. They are normally carried by a caddie or put on a golf cart.  Generally they are made from leather and are comparatively expensive.  If you want to take all your golf equipment with you, this type of bag will allow you to do this.  However, because of the weight and size, you will need a caddy or you will need to put it on the golf cart or buggy.

 

The golf carry bag, normally made from nylon or plastic, is smaller and therefore much lighter than the tour and cart bags.  They are designed to carry fewer clubs along with a few accessories and they often come with a stand, hence the name ‘golf stand bag’.  These bags are perfect if you prefer to carry your own clubs as they are relatively lightweight and comfortable to carry.  The stand enables you to leave the bag in an upright position whilst you select your clubs and play your shots.  There are many different designs and options that offer more features and functionality. 

 

The golf cart bag is another large golf bag but often not quite as large as the tour bag.  Even though some will accommodate up to 14 golf clubs, they do generally have fewer pockets for other golf equipment.  However, they are generally made from lighter materials than the tour bag and are specifically designed to sit on a golf cart or trolley.  If you want to save all your energy for the game, then a bag you can put on the golf trolley is a good choice.

 

There are, in fact, two other popular golf bags that you may want to consider:-

 

1. Golf pencil bags
2. Golf travel bags
 
The golf pencil bag is a lightweight golf bag, often used when you only want to carry a few clubs, perhaps a half set.  You may want to keep the pencil bag in the car or take it on short trips, or use it for your practise sessions when you only want to take the bare minimum.  However, most of these bags can carry a full set of clubs, but little else.  They are designed to be carried and are not usually adaptive to a stand attachment.

 

The golf travel bag is for use when you want to transport all your golf equipment together.  These bags will hold your golf bag with all its contents and keep your equipment safe whilst travelling.  An ideal choice for someone who likes to take their golf clubs when travelling abroad.

 

Having decided on which kind of golf bag to buy, what sort of features can you look out for? Some come with a stand or wheels, or both.  This can make handling a lot easier.  Make sure the interior is clearly divided so your golf clubs don't knock together.  Pouches are sometimes labelled for ease of use. Ensure that access is easy and that the zippers or fastenings are easy to handle and durable.  You may prefer a strap over a handle or the option of either.

 

Choosing a golf bag that is right for you and your kind of play is worth the effort.  An easily carried, hard-wearing and accessible bag that protects your precious golf clubs won’t improve your handicap, but it will make your round of golf a lot easier.
